The History
St. Michael’s Church in Munich was built with the political support of Albert V, Duke of Bavaria (and later, his son William V, Duke of Bavaria) in mid to late 1500s as a show of their support for the Jesuit (Catholic) Counter Reformation.
Interesting Facts
- St. Michael’s is the largest Renaissance Church in the Alps.
- The Church inspired a great deal of early Baroque Architecture.
- St. Michael’s has the second largest barrel vault in the world (the largest is St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City).
